I was wondering if there are a few people out there that can direct me or connect me with local distributors here in the San Francisco Bay Area at first and then branch out into the United States.

What type of drink or product are you selling? That helps determine the type of distributor or network you should be looking for. Furthermore, Don't think small time. Think state and region, then National distribution. Beverage is a volume business, go as far as you can with distribution.
